What are Interactive Workbooks?

by Lori Harvill Moore

Interactive workbooks, such as those available on our English for Kids Shopify store, are  ebooks that contain links to chapter videos and exercises that can be completed online. The workbooks supplement traditional programs, allowing parents to choose the topics their children need to learn to bolster specific English skills.

Learning Experiences Enhanced

A deeper dive into grammar, reading, and writing concepts gives students an immersive experience.  Videos and exercises cover the same material as the chapter text but in a different way. The videos introduce concepts featured in chapter text, and the exercises extend the student's thinking while testing understanding of the key concepts.

Flexible and Accessible Learning

The workbooks allow students to proceed at their own pace, and review concepts that may have been difficult for them to understand at first through traditional classes.  For example, verb tense and verb types can cause confusion.  They are covered in a straight-forward way in our grammar workbooks, which fit easily into a student's schedule.

Reinforcing Measured Skills

English language arts (ELA) workbooks reinforce skills required by Common Core reading and writing standards. These supplemental workbooks help prepare learners for assessments.

Students in traditional schools receive assessments, especially at grades four and eight.  According to the Coalition for Responsible Home Education, some states require homeschool students to receive standardized tests and outside consultants may perform a portfolio review.

Interactive Workbooks Support Diverse Learning Styles

Chapter videos and online exercises accompanying chapter text in our English workbooks effectively address a wide array of learning styles by incorporating diverse and adaptable teaching methods. Here's how they cater to different learners:

Visual Learners: Chapter videos include animations, graphics, and diagrams that help visual learners better understand concepts. Seeing a grammar rule in action or watching a story unfold visually can enhance retention and comprehension.

Auditory Learners: Videos with voiceovers and dialogues provide auditory input, helping learners who benefit most from hearing information.

Kinesthetic Learners: Interactive online exercises requiring the student to type their response engage kinesthetic learners who need hands-on interaction to retain knowledge.

Read/Write Learners: The chapter text and the exercises make it easier for learners who prefer reading and writing to absorb information.

Research Support for Interactive Workbooks

Research highlights the effectiveness of chapter videos and online exercises in enhancing English learning among those learning English as a foreign language:

Interactive Video Lessons: A study conducted in the Philippines demonstrated that interactive video lessons significantly improved English proficiency among Grade 10 students. The experimental group using these videos showed notable progress compared to the control group.

EFL Online Learning: A systematic review of research on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) online learning found that digital tools like videos and exercises were highly effective. They improved accessibility, adaptability, and student autonomy, though challenges like technical issues and motivation were noted.

Student Engagement and Performance: Another review analyzed the impact of online learning on student engagement and performance. It found that interactive elements, such as multimedia resources and discussion forums, were critical in improving both engagement and academic outcomes.
